The first written mention dates back to 1224, when the King of Bohemia Přemysl Otakar I. dwelt here with his large retinue. Very probably Hulín was founded much earlier. This hypothesis is supported both by the advantageous location in the river basin of Morava along the axis of the old merchant roads and by some archeological funds. Hulín is very poor in written historical sources because of numerous fires. They were caused by nature disasters but above all by the military marches.
The construction of the Nothern railway of the Emperor Ferdinand in the year 1841 deeply influenced the development in the town. Since that time Hulín has become a very important transport. In the year 1848 unusually lively traffic is mentioned here, because nearly all deputies went in coaches from the Hulín railway stationto the Austrian Constitutional Assembly in Kroměříž.
The late Romanesque portal from 1224 can be seen in the side-chapel of the St. Wenceslaus Church.
There is a long tradition of machinery production in the town.
